Axel Merckx

Axel Merckx is a world-renowned Belgian bicycle racing champion who retired to British Columbia, Canada, in 2007. Born in 1972 in Uccle, Belgium, Axel is the son of five-time Tour de France champion Eddy Merckx. Although proud of his father's exploits, Axel has himself enjoyed a superb racing career, including winning an Olympic Medal in 2004.

Axel began his professional cycling career in 1993 as a member of Team Motorola. Axel married Canadian triathlete Jodi Cross in 1997, and upon his retirement from bicycle racing in 2007, he moved with his family to Kelowna, British Columbia.

Winner of the 2000 Belgian National Championship, he has participated in eight Tours de France, finishing as the highest-placed Belgian rider six times. Axel's other accomplishments include winning the Belgianstage wins in the Giro d'Italia and Dauphine Libere. He has also won the GP Sanson, the Tour de la Region Wallone, the Grand Prix de Wallonie, and the Tour de l'Ain.

Axel Merckx, former National Cycling Champion of Belgium and Olympic Medallist, has established a unique cycle touring company. Now living in Canada's western Province of British Columbia, he is offering several cycling tours, both in Europe and around this Canadian world-renowned tourist area. These guided cycling tours are geared towards intermediate to advanced level cyclists who wish to truly experience the world of cycling from a champion's perspective.

Axel Merckx also also lends his skills and enthusiasm to a wide variety of rides at different times in support of some superb causes, such as cancer research, or simply in support of the challenge of cycling.

In addition to Axel's tours, he also offers a variety of clinics to bicycle enthusiasts in the Okanagan Region of British Columbia

Fartlek Running

Fartlek Running ?

What the hell does Fartlek mean? That's what I asked many years ago when I was training for my first marathon and subsequently used this technique of "improvised speed workouts" when I trained for Ironman. In essence, a Fartlek is swedish for "speed play". This method of training puts stress mainly on the aerobic energy system due to the continuous nature of the running session. The difference between this type of training and continuous training is that the intensity or speed of the exercise varies greatly, so the aerobic AND anaerobic systems can be put under stress. Most fartlek sessions last a minimum of 45 minutes and can vary from aerobic walking to anaerobic sprinting. Fartlek training is generally associated with running, but can include almost any kind of exercise - a great way to train for Sprint or short distance triathlons.

Who Fartlek'd ?

Looks like my Who Fartlek'd design that was featured in the Runner's World Christmas Gift Guide has spawned a bunch of imposters who are blatantly copying my Fartlek design and releasing it on other custom t-shirt websites. Of course, this is obviously a free world and despite the fact that ALL my designs are copyrighted by my company - gymskinz apparel inc., it's hard to prevent people from ripping off my designs - What REALLY pisses me off is when people don't even bother changing the font or layout or make any effort whatsoever to alter the design at all - that's sad. I'm certain more running and triathlon related designs have been stolen from me but I guess that's the sad reality.

every now and then relating to triathlon and fitness... yes, crazy I know...

Performance - the folks that got my a$$ to the finish line at Ironman Canada; not once, but TWICE!

Thanks to the help of Mike and Anita at Peak, I even managed to finish half
an hour quicker this year with a lot less training and junk-mileage (and sleep, but don't tell Anita that)

So I finally got off my ass and hit the road today out in Langley with Hoz, Ron, Greg, and Tara's Dad - Ross. It was pretty close to a hammerfest and trying to get up that one hill on LeFebre damn near killed me!

Anyway, despite the burning legs, it was nice to finally get BACK outside to ride instead of parking my butt on the computrainer like we've been doing for the last 4 months! We have a duathlon to do in about 6 weeks and judging by how painful the run was after the ride, I think I'll be in for a very rude awakening if I don't get my act together in the next couple weeks!

Hope everyone is having a great start to their 2007 race season. Keep in touch and stay tuned for the podcast about this ride!
